WPN Changes Board Members, Focus

The Women's Professional Network has announced changes in its advisory board and the restructuring of its focus for 2000.

"Our past leadership has provided the WPN board with a good foundation from which to build,  says Cindi Pree, the new president. “"The new leadership is excited about WPN's networking focus and our organization's continued growth and community involvement. 

Pree replaced Dee Johnson, president for the last three years. Other new WPN board members are Michelle Dotinga, marketing programs; publicity chair Dasha Parrott; and Amory Peck, secretary.

The WPN plans to concentrate efforts this year in several areas, Pree says, including the recruitment of a larger network of contacts to support the organization's renewed focus on professional networking. WPN also plans to create a larger community presence through charitable work and to increase fund-raising efforts this year to double the scholarships awarded this fall.

"We offer women a comfortable and supportive environment in which to network,  Pree states. “"We also offer opportunities to give back to our community.

Brink, Corcoran Join Alsum & Bode

Trisha Brink and Chris Corcoran have joined the staff of Alsum & Bode Furniture at 303 Front St., Lynden.

Brink has a degree in residential interior design from the Art Institute of Seattle and assists customers in that area. She also attended Lynden Christian High School and Seattle Pacific University.

Brink has been working in the retail/design field for about seven years. Her specialties are color, fabrics, accessories and furniture style and placement, but Brink emphasizes she works with all design styles and budgets.

"My goals are to work with a client's lifestyle and personal belongings to achieve a balanced individual look,  she says. “"I do this by adding color, texture and accessories. 

She is available at the store Mondays through Thursdays and by appointment for in-home consultations.

Corcoran has been working in retail for 27 years and has been focused on home design and furniture sales for the last 15 years. She previously worked for J.C. Penney's Customer Decorating Services and sold furniture for the Bon Marché's Furniture Gallery.

Vieth Assisting Olympic on Safety Action Plan

Olympic Pipe Line Co. has selected Patrick Vieth of CC Technologies to assist the company with implementation of the pipeline inspection component of its safety action plan.

Viet, a senior group leader with the technologies firm based in Dublin, Ohio, is a recognized expert in pipeline testing. He has extensive experience in assisting the operators of pipeline systems in developing and implementing short-term and long-term pipeline integrity management programs. His background includes 13 years of experience with a wide range of inspection devices, including devices that check the roundness of a pipe and those that look for wall loss in a pipe as a result of defects in the manufacturing process, areas of corrosion or damage to the wall of a pipe caused by external force.

Olympic operates a 400-mile pipeline system that runs within a 299-mile corridor from Ferndale to Portland, Ore., and carries refined petroleum products.


CVB's Cooper Attends Tour Convention

John Cooper, executive director of the Bellingham/Whatcom Convention & Visitors Bureau, learned about new trends in the travel industry, networked with colleagues and improved professional skills at the National Tour Association's 1999 annual convention in November at Nashville, Tenn.

The five-day convention attracts more than 3,300 travel professionals, including tour operators, suppliers such as hotels and attractions, and destination marketing organizations such as state and local tourism offices. Cooper met with 40 group tour operators during one segment of the convention.

 

Whatcom County Realtors Honor Baila, Jarrett

Richard Baila and Kelly Jarrett have received awards from the Whatcom County Association of Realtors.

Baila, a Realtor for RE/MAX Whatcom County, was named Realtor of the Third Quarter for volunteering his time for the betterment of the real estate industry. Baila served as treasurer for the county association in 1997 and 1998 and as a director for the Washington State Association of Realtors the last two years.

Jarrett, a marketing and sales representative for First American Title Co. in Bellingham, was honored as Affiliate of the Third Quarter. She has been in the title business in the county for 15 years and was selected for the award for her outstanding professionalism and service to the housing industry. Jarrett was local chair of fund-raising events last year for the Realtors Political Action Committee. She also has volunteered time for the Realtor Golf Tournament and to raise funds for the Whatcom County Food Bank.

 

Robertson Heads Cordata Healthcare Center

Terry Robertson has been named administrator of the 122-bed Cordata Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, a Sunbridge Healthcare skilled-nursing facility that is opening this month at 4680 Cordata Parkway, Bellingham.

Robertson has 11 years' experience as an administrator, including the last two years at Sunbridge Healthcare's Mercer Island facility. He is a member of the Washington Healthcare Association and the American Healthcare Association.

Cordata Healthcare has spacious private rooms with views of Mt. Baker and a 3,000-square-foot rehabilitation room for physical, occupational and speech therapy.

 

Toolhouse Design Co. Hires Four

Toolhouse Design Co., a Bellingham multidisciplinary design firm, recently hired four employees.

Ryin Kobza joined the company as a graphic designer. Kobza's design and production abilities are focused on corporate identity and logo development, as well as miscellaneous print collateral, packaging and signage products. Before joining Toolhouse, he lived in the San Francisco Bay area and received a bachelor of science degree in art and graphic design from California Polytechnic State University. His career highlights include design work for entertainers Marilyn Manson, Eric Clapton and Neil Young.

Kris Dahl was hired as a Web programmer. He focuses on creating custom e-commerce and Web functionality solutions for Toolhouse clients. Dahl previously was a system engineer for Alpha Tech Computers.

Greg deVeer has rejoined the company as a Web and interactive designer. He previously spent two years with Toolhouse and now will focus on developing interactive elements, navigation and user interfaces for Web and multimedia projects. Since graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design, deVeer also has worked for MB Design and Alpha Technologies in Bellingham and BMR Design + Advertising in Mount Vernon.

Kristi Coulter was named production manager for Toolhouse Design. She has more than 15 years of experience in the print and publishing field. She is responsible for Toolhouse production workflow, critical path, print and production details, as well as serving as the key contact for client and vendor interactions. Coulter most recently worked at Small Planet Foods as traffic manager, coordinating the print and production details for three major food brands. She also worked three years as a print buyer for clothing retailer Eddie Bauer and 11 years managing the graphic center for Harmon Publishing. Coulter has a bachelor of science degree in visual communication from Western Washington University.

 

Ney Named VP at Talbot Investment Co.

Rob Ney has been named vice president of development and construction for Talbot Investment Co. of Bellingham.

Ney will oversee the company's real-estate matters and assist in the development and management of construction projects in the Barkley District of Bellingham. He has more than 10 years of experience in construction, engineering, development and planning. He replaces Dennis Handel, who retired in December.

 

Connolly Tabbed for Bank's Agricultural Position

Charlie Connolly has been named vice president and client manager of agricultural banking for Bank of America in Bellingham.

Connolly will be based at the bank's downtown office, 112 E. Holly St., and will serve clients throughout northwest Washington. He has 19 years of agricultural banking and credit experience. Connolly graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in agricultural education.

McNichols Launches On-line Counseling Business

Terry McNichols of Bellingham has started an on-line counseling business, GetHelpOnline.org.

McNichols, a therapist in private practice in Bellingham for the past 10 years, is licensed by the National Board of Counselors and the state of Washington. She is trained in marriage and family therapy.

McNichols communicates with clients in her new business through e-mail.

"I think this type of counseling could be useful to those who would like to talk to a trained professional counselor but don't want to commit to ongoing therapy and who enjoy communicating via computer,  she says.

Helgath Certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Greg Helgath of Lynden has been certified as a clinical specialist in orthopedic therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

Helgath is owner of County Orthopedic and Sports Therapy (COAST), which has offices in Lynden and Birch Bay. He specializes in the treatment of spinal conditions, knee rehabilitation and fibromyalgia with a special interest in the treatment of athletes.

A graduate of the University of Puget Sound, Helgath is one of only 56 board-certified orthopedic clinic specialists in the state and the only one in Whatcom County. Washington state has 4,300 physical therapists.

 

Reardanz Joins Chmelik Sitkin & Davis

Les E. Reardanz, the former senior assistant attorney for the City of Bellingham, has joined the Bellingham law firm of Chmelik, Sitkin & Davis P.S.

Reardanz most recently practiced real estate, contracts and general municipal law with the Bellingham City Attorney's office. He represented private corporations in all phases of international and domestic maritime and commercial civil litigation with Lane Powell Spears Lubersky in Seattle before moving to Bellingham.

Chmelik, Sitkin & Davis, located at 1500 Railroad Ave., represents businesses, municipal governments, professional practices, contractor and development companies and the people who own and manage them.

 

Sea Sport's Patterson Gains Electrical Certification

Kevin Patterson, a marine technician at Sea Sport Boats of Bellingham, recently completed the electrical certification program offered by the American Boat & Yacht Council.

ABYC is responsible for developing, writing and updating the voluntary safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States. Patterson completed its week-long training, testing and certification process.

Perlman Managing Foreign Trade Zone

International Market Access, Inc., of Bellingham has assigned Dan Perlman to be project manager of its Foreign Trade Zone.

Perlman has been with IMA for 18 months. He now is focusing on activating and marketing the general-purpose Foreign Trade Zone at the Port of Bellingham's International Trade Building at 3873 Airport Way, Bellingham.

Perlman has 20 years of business experience in sales, marketing and distribution, including 10 years as a small-business owner.

Canaday, Sexton Join Windermere Staff

Sales associates Cleve Canaday and Dawn Sexton have joined the Bellingham office of Windermere Real Estate/Whatcom Inc.

Canaday has worked in real estate six years, including four years at Windermere's Marysville office.

Sexton previously worked two years at John L. Scott Realty in Bellingham.

 

Haggen Tabbed for E-commerce Position

Haggen, Inc., of Bellingham as selected Jeff Haggen for a new senior-level position, vice president of e-commerce.

Jeff Haggen will report to Dale Henley, company president and chief executive officer, on development of an integrated system of e-commerce. He will be responsible for researching the existing e-commerce market and developing a strategy for greater Haggen Food and Pharmacy and TOP Food and Drug stores' presence on the Internet. Areas that will be further explored by the company include development of a Web page and links to other Web sites, online shopping, pick-up or home delivery and partnering opportunities.

"We feel this next move to expand our business into areas of e-commerce will further provide our customers with convenient ways to make shopping easier, quicker and more suitable in today's busy world,  Henley says.

Jeff Haggen joined the company in 1978 as a courtesy clerk. He has held various positions since then, including store manager, grocery buyer, manager of finance and real estate. Most recently he was vice president of sales and merchandising.

He has a bachelor of arts degree in finance from Seattle Pacific University and is a graduate of the University of Southern California's Food Industry Management Program.

 

Festival of Music Appoints Standley

The Bellingham Festival of Music has appointed Rachel Standley its operations coordinator.

Standley, a native of Port Angeles, graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor of arts degree in comparative history of ideas. She was the marketing assistant for the Seattle Chamber Music Festival for about a year and has a strong interest in working for nonprofit organizations.

Brown & Cole Names Two Store Managers

Brown & Cole Stores has named managers for Cost Cutter supermarkets in Bellingham and Ferndale.

Mike Johnson is the new store manager at the Meridian Cost Cutter, 4131 Meridian St., Bellingham. He had been store manager at the Ferndale Cost Cutter since 1995. During his tenure there, he led the store through a successful remodeling and a grand opening after the store's conversion to the Cost Cutter format. He previously worked in management roles for Albertson's.

Monty McDowell was promoted to store manager at the Ferndale Cost Cutter. He most recently was interim store manager at Bellingham. McDowell began his grocery career with Consumers Choice in 1986, working as a courtesy clerk at its Everson store. He has held many positions since then, from night stocker to produce manager, and served as store manager at Everson Red Apple and Cost Cutter Limited in Sumas. For the past three years, he was assistant store manager in Bellingham.

 

Jennings Heads Ferndale Chamber of Commerce

Steve Jennings, manager of Cedars RV Resort Campground, has been elected board president for the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce.

The other officers for 2000 are Jerry Ecklund, public relations director for the Tosco refinery in Ferndale, first vice president; Dave Carr, owner of Dave's Rolling Stock Maintenance, second vice president; and Bill Parks, principal of Vista Middle School, treasurer.

Jerns Joins Johnsons at John L. Scott

Pat Jerns has joined the husband-and-wife team of Rich and Lylene Johnson at John L. Scott Real Estate in Bellingham.

Born and raised in Bellingham, Jerns has served real estate clients in Whatcom County for 13 years. He has been president of the Whatcom County Association of Realtors, vice president for education of the Washington State Association of Realtors and a state-certified real-estate instructor and mediator.

Founder of Can-Am Program Honored

Robert Monahan, who laid the groundwork for Western Washington University's Center for Canadian-American Studies, recently was honored for his contributions to Canadian studies in the United States.

Monahan was presented the 1999 Donner Award, which is awarded biennially by The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) for distinguished achievement, scholarship and program innovation.

Western's Center for Canadian-American Studies, which offers one of the few comprehensive programs for the study of Canada in the United States, was formally established in 1970. Monahan was its director from 1976 to 1993.

Today, the center coordinates both major and minor programs in Canadian studies; promotes research on Canadian topics in the social sciences, humanities and professional schools; organizes seminars and symposia on cross-border issues; and conducts outreach programs for educators, businesspersons, the media and cultural organizations.

Since retiring in 1993, Monahan continues to serve as a consultant to the university's Canadian studies program, teach in the Study Canada Summer Institute for Teachers and work with The Western Foundation.

Tammy Carey received the Product Line Management Consultant of the Year Award from her company, Bellingham-based Olympic Health Management.

The award recognizes individuals who consistently expect excellence in their team and themselves. Carey was cited as a leader who places the well-being of team members above her own and fighting for greater rewards and recognition for them before considering her own needs.

Iowa Business Center Gains Chiropractor

Dr. Terry Poth started the new year by opening a chiropractic practice in the Iowa Business Center, 1728 Iowa St., Bellingham.

Poth has provided chiropractic care for Whatcom County residents since 1990. His involvement in health care began 20 years ago as a licensed massage practitioner in Port Townsend.

He met the requirements for certification as a chiropractic sports physician in 1994. Over the last three years, Poth completed a 360-hour program in chiropractic rehabilitation and traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic to study at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Charles University. This year he plans to complete the requirements for the designation of a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board.

Chiropractic rehabilitation integrates the chiropractic adjustment (manipulation) with the restoration of normal movement patterns to achieve spinal health.

Bayside Associates Adds Two Therapists

Whatcom Literacy Council Hires Kirn

The Whatcom Literacy Council has named Susan Kirn its community outreach coordinator.

Kirn's goal is to expand local support and increase the number of students the council is abile to serve. She has previous experience in marketing and program development and most recently worked as the marketing and teacher training administrator at International House, an English-as-a-second-language school, in Portland, Ore.

Marroquin Joins Holland Homecare

Linda Marroquin recently was named rehabilitation secretary for Holland Homecare in Bellingham.

Besides secretarial duties, Marroquin also provides support for Holland Homecare's rehabilitation technology specialist. She replaces Tim Willins, who was promoted to human resource director.

Holland Homecare supplies durable medical equipment, hospital supplies and custom seating and positioning for manual and power wheelchairs. Owned by Jerry Willins, the company was founded 15 years ago in Mount Vernon and opened a second location three years ago at 809 W. Orchard Drive, No. 3, Bellingham.

Grizzly Industrial Adds Engineer, Broker

Grizzly Industrial, Inc. announced the addition of Curtis R. Adams and Tom Crow to its corporate headquarters staff in Bellingham.

Adams is a licensed customs broker and will coordinate overseas air and ocean shipments for the company. He has 14 years of experience in the brokerage industry and has been licensed since 1990.

Crow has an engineering degree from Western Washington University and over 10 years of AutoCad experience in the aerospace industry. He will be working in Grizzly Industrial's quality insurance program.
