Business Survey to Include All Whatcom County Businesses

The Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a part of Western Washington University’s Center for Economic and Business Research (CEBR) implementation of a countywide business survey starting at the end of May. This survey grew out of the enormous interest generated at the Peeling Back the Myths presentation at the Bellwether in January. At that presentation, CEBR director Hart Hodges and Tom Dorr, director of WWU’s Small Business Development Center, discussed the current economic situation in Whatcom County. The new survey is planned as an annual event and this year will include new information about various industries that have been underrepresented in previous studies, including the agricultural sector. The survey results will help the business community and legislators gauge how Whatcom County businesses are faring, provide previously unavailable data such as numbers of part-time vs. full-time workers, and will be an indicator of shared problems and issues among business owners.

CEBR has joined with a variety of local business and economic development organizations for this survey. The county Chambers of Commerce had been planning a survey, as had several other organizations, so a coalition was formed to prevent duplication of efforts and to make sure county business owners are not inundated with survey requests. Each participating organization was asked to assist in formulating the survey questions, with survey results providing direction for each when planning services. Included in the survey creation process were the Whatcom County Chambers, the Port of Bellingham, Western Washington University’s Small Business Development Center, the Economic Development Council, Worksource, a representative from both the County and the City of Bellingham, the Lummi Indian Business Council, the Downtown Renaissance Network, and the local chapter of the Washington Latino Business Association. The results of the survey will be presented to the community in early fall.

This will be largely an online survey, with hard copy versions available at each Chamber of Commerce or by phone request. Printable versions will also be available on the survey web site, which can either be filled out and faxed or mailed. Baron and Company will be assisting with the online survey, and data will be held and maintained at the CEBR office. Information will be strictly confidential, names will be separated from survey questions upon receipt, used only to enter participants in a drawing for prizes. You will find a link to the survey at http://www.cbe.wwu.edu/cebr.

When survey is submitted, participants will automatically be entered into a drawing to win one of three premium prizes:

• An overnight stay for two in a deluxe room and two Swedish massages at the Chrysalis Inn and Spa.

• A $100 gift certificate to the Oyster Bar Restaurant on Chuckanut Drive,

• Two tickets to a show of your choice in the regular Mount Baker Theatre 2003-04 Season
