Economics firm adds two Northern Economics, an Alaska-based economics firm with a Bellingham office, hired two economists. Kelly Porteen brings her background in natural resource, environmental and regulatory economics to the firm. She has a master’s degree in economics from the University of Wyoming and recently moved to Bellingham from Laramie, Wyo. Tamer Kirac will focus on economic development and project impact studies. Some of his responsibilities will include working with economic development agencies, resource development analysis and project impact assessment. Kirac has a master’s degree in regional economics and geography from the University of Washington.
Psych prof focuses on workplace bullying Gary Namie, a faculty member in Western Washington University’s psychology department, is trying to raise awareness about workplace bullying. To Namie, workplace bullying is “…serious, deliberate, hurtful, repeated mistreatment of a target person by a bullying harasser driven by his or her need to control others.” He is part of a California drive to make workplace bullying illegal. A bill to allow workers to seek remedy for health problems attributable to an abusive work environment will be debated by the state assembly this year. “We started in California because of its large population base,” Namie said. He and his wife, Ruth, recently completed a revision of their book, The Bully at Work.
Michaels rocks KISM in the morning Laurie Michaels joined Rockfish and Cash in the Morning, the drive-time show on KISM-FM. She brings more than 17 years morning show radio experience from stations in Denver and Phoenix. Michaels is a California native with relatives in Anacortes. She will serve as on-air personality and news anchor. “[Michaels]…adds a new dimension to the format,” said Carol Dooley, KISM program director. “She’s a bit of morning sunshine.”
ADI adds marketing director Trinka Baron is the new director of marketing and client relations at Applied Digital Imaging. She brings a great deal of sales and marketing experience to her new position and will focus on building awareness about Applied Digital’s products and services.
Gallay wins top history prize Alan Gallay, American history professor at Western Washington University, recently won the Bancroft Prize, an award given to “American history books of distinction and merit.” Gallay wrote The Indian Slave Trade: The Rise of the English Empire in the American South, 1670-1717. His is the first book to chronicle trafficking in Indian slaves during the early years of the South. Gallay has taught at Western since 1988.
Morgan Stanley adds three Morgan Stanley’s Bellingham office added three new financial advisors. Stanislav A. Zalkin joined the firm. He has a degree from Western Washington University in finance and economics and is a Bellingham resident. Zalkin is also a member of the Cornwall Park Church of God. Terry Lee also holds a degree from Western Washington University. A Bellingham resident, Lee is active in Puget Sound Soccer Academy and the Whatcom Football Club Rangers Association. Craig Rice is the third new advisor at Morgan Stanley. Rice has a pair of undergraduate degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. He comes to the financial industry with 11-years experience in equipment and fleet leasing and seven years in semi-custom boat and yacht sales. Rice is a resident of Anacortes. All three new advisors were trained at the company’s investment school in San Francisco.
Horizon hires for commercial banking Horizon Bank added a new member to their commercial banking team. Violet Martinson is now vice president and commercial lending documentation manager. She will be based in the Bellingham commercial banking office. A Skagit County resident, Martinson has 28 years commercial banking experience, including stints at Seafirst Bank and Washington Mutual. She serves on the advisory panel for Skagit Valley College’s international student exchange program and is involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Steel now at ioCreative Emily Steel joined ioCreative as a project coordinator. She will track projects to ensure smooth and timely completion and she also brings editing and writing skills. Steel graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in journalism with a specialization in public relations.
Haggen announces numerous staffing changes Mike Lobaugh was named vice president of perishables. He will oversee the meat, seafood and produce departments. Lobaugh started at Haggen in 1978 while in high school. He stayed with the company while attending the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in mathematics and psychology. Scott Brown was promoted to vice president of center store. He joined Haggen in 1982 and has held a number of jobs, including variety manager, merchandising specialist, director of general merchandise, director of grocery marketing and, most recently, director of central store. Brown has a business degree from Western Washington University and attended the Food Industry Management Program at the University of Southern California. Dave Norton is now senior vice president of sales and marketing. He will have expanded responsibility for marketing. He joined Haggen in 1998 with extensive experience in the grocery industry, including stints as senior vice president of retail at Eagle Food Center and with Food4Less/Alpha Beta. Scott Smith was made vice president of marketing. He joined Haggen in 1995 and has been involved in creating print and broadcast campaigns for Haggen and for TOP Food & Drug. He will oversee all aspects of Haggen’s advertising. Smith has 18 years experience in marketing, advertising and sales and has a finance degree from the University of Utah.
Whatcom Title promotes, adds Whatcom Land Title added an employee and promoted two others. Lisa Kyles is back on staff after an absence of one year. Kyles is a limited practice officer and brings 13 years experience in escrow closings. She was with WLT for 12 years before spending last year at Fidelity National Title in Seattle. Connie Dyer will now head up the human resources and the technology departments. She has worked in both departments since joining WLT last summer and is a Microsoft certified trainer. Judi MacPhee will work full time in marketing after splitting her time between personnel and marketing for the past ten years. She is charged with helping grow the business through the county’s burgeoning real estate market.
Frontier Bank promotes MacIsaac Bob MacIsaac is vice president and manager of Frontier Bank’s Bellingham office. He has 18 years experience in banking with Columbia State Bank in Bellevue and with US Bank in Bellingham. MacIsaac has an undergraduate degree in finance from California State University at Northridge and has completed graduate studies in finance at California State University at Los Angeles.
Keller Williams adds two Suzie Perry joined Keller Williams Realty as a real estate consultant. She has fifteen years experience in a variety of marketing positions and as a vocational rehabilitation consultant. Perry has an education degree and real estate experience through her own property management and investment. Wayne Gardner is a real estate sale associate. He comes to Keller Williams with extensive experience in sales, including time as manager of Copeland Lumber in Everson. Gardner also ran his own construction firm.
Key Bank promotes Bouma Key Bank made Kent Bouma vice president of business banking. He will manage business banking customer portfolios. Bouma has an economics degree from the University of Washington and was previously assistant vice president of business banking.
Hall interns at Zervas Group Lee Hall is an intern architect at Zervas Group Architects in Bellingham. Hall was born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Prosser. He is a 2002 graduate of Washington State University’s school of architecture and construction management. Hall is currently working on projects including the Lynnwood Convention Center, Western Washington University’s Birnam Wood Remodel and the south side Food Pavilion.
Fairhaven Realty welcomes Martin Ryan Martin joined Fairhaven Realty recently. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Martin has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Western Washington University.
